What Is Business Intelligence?
Business intelligence (BI) uses knowledge
management, data integration, data mining and
business analysis to identify, track and improve key
processes and data, as well as identify and monitor
trends in corporate, competitor and market

SAS supports business intelligence with the
following:
• a set of client applications
• SAS server processes
• a centralized metadata management facility
The SAS Enterprise Intelligence Platform consists of
software with components that exist on multiple machines
throughout the organization.

consists of a
multiple-tier
environment that is
typically
represented
by the following:
• client tier
• Web tier
• server tier
• data tier

Client Tier
In the most basic terms, if an
application is installed on the
machine where the user is
sitting, that machine is part of
the client tier.
There are three different types
of SAS client applications:
 Java applications
 Windows applications
 Web browser applications

The Web tier is where the Web
applications reside and execute.
The Web tier also contains the
infrastructure that supports the
execution of the Web browser
applications:
 Java Servlet Container

Server Tier
The server tier consists of one
or more machines where the
SAS servers are installed and
accessed by the business
intelligence applications.
There are different types of SAS
servers, including the following:
 metadata server
 workspace server
 stored process server
 OLAP server
