In search for new communication media have we build a prototype of two connected chairs that enable
communication between the peers of persons using the chairs. We call these chairs "SoftAir
Communication". The basic idea is that sensors should react upon a person that use one of the chairs
and communicate that information to the other chair that express this remote presence through light and
sound.
The installation "SoftAir Communication" could be interpreted as an image of how we could interact
and communicate using our whole body, through light and sound we could manifest our awareness,
presence and quest.
The interaction and rendering of feedback in the chairs might bridges the gulf of distance between two
physically separated humans. From being outside to feeling included, from isolation to the feeling of
company, from coldness to fundamental warmth and human embodiment.
The media of tomorrow will manifest multiple characters, will use combinations of fundamental
geometric and organic forms sprung from nature and technology - this is what we have attempted to
gestalt through the chairs in the "Soft AirCommunication" expression.

I sökandet av nya kommunikationsformer så har vi byggt ett par
kommunicerande stolar som möjliggör kommunikation mellan två människor som sitter i varsin av
dessa möbler. Vi har kallar detta koncept ”SoftAir Communication”.
Grundiden är att sensorer skall fånga upp hur en person rör sig i stolen för att sedan den andra stolen,
via telekommunikation, skall återge denna rörelse med ljud och ljus.
Interaktionen och återkopplingen mellan stolarna möjliggör en känsla av närhet mellan två människor
som på håll använder varsin av dessa stolar. Från utifrån till inifrån, från isolation till närhet, från kallt
till varmt och mänskligt.
MÅL
”SoftAir Communication” har nu ställts ut två gånger, vid en offentlig utställning (Global Tendency
Machine – Stockholms kulturhuvudstadsprojekt) samt vid en mässa (Svenska paviljongen på
COMDEX’98). Framöver så tänker vi oss att utveckla ”SoftAir Communication” inom ramen av
emotionell kommunikation med nya typer av IKEAS AIR möbler.
